Flatbread Company (Somerville)
Last Saturday we were celebrating Aida's 22nd birthday! James decided to surprise her with something she had never done before....candle stick bowling at Sacco's Bowl Heaven near Davis Square in Somerville!
The Flatbread Company takes up half of the building. The retro vibe at this half restaurant, half bowling local hits you right as you walk in the door. Us being us, we decided to give the restaurant a chance while we waited for a bowling lane to open up. The Flatbread Company prides itself in its organic approach to food. Everything from their lighting fixtures to their old fashioned brick ovens screams organic.
Personally, we are not followers of the "organic" movement; the FDA has no formal definition for the term organic, therefore we don't really worry about it. However, we must admit that the food at the Flatbread Company was good, the servers were friendly, and the laid atmosphere was contagious!
Since we were celebrating we started our meal with a cocktail. In all honesty we cant remember the exact name of the drink. It was mainly composed of Tequila and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice...the bartender literally squeezed the grapefruit in front of us. This drink was one of their house specialties. The flavor was good and balanced. We are not big drinkers but we would definitely order it again!
At a place called the Flatbread Company you have to order a flatbread! We ordered a large flatbread (which was more than enough for two people) with a combination of two of their specialty flatbreads. On the left we had pulled pork, pineapple, onion, and their homemade tomato sauce. The pork was deliciously juicy and full of flavor. The tomato sauce needed a bit more seasoning in our opinion; it almost felt as if it came right out of a can. Yet, with a little bit of added salt on our part the flavors came together nicely!
On the right hand side we had the Flatbread Company's Jimmy's Free Range Chicken Flatbread, topped with oven roasted free range chicken, black beans, organic cilantro, tomatoes, roasted corn, mozzarella and parmesan cheeses, and a sour cream sauce. This flatbread was delicious! All the flavors worked harmoniously together. We ordered jalapeños on the side, which added a nice kick of flavor. Overall, the Flatbread Company does pizza the right way!
Last but not least, we bowled a few games at Sacco's Bowl Heaven, located on the other half of the building. For two games of bowling and two shoe rentals it come up to be around $20...which is not bad for being so close to Boston. We went on a Saturday afternoon and the place was full of families with young children; if you are looking for a more mature atmosphere we suggest going later on at night. We really enjoyed our experience and would definitely consider returning!
