Gem Restaurant & Lounge is by far one of our favorite restaurants in town. Therefore, when we heard they had launched a new menu we just had to check it out! The new menu is composed of classic, comfort food American dishes alongside some more upscale dishes for the adventurous eater.
First up we ordered, Gem's Tequila Tryst, which is a Don Julio Blanco, St. Germain, Lime-Agave, and House Strawberry cocktail. This cocktail was delicious. Perfect for a very hot summer day!
We decided to start our meal with Gem's Garlic Cream, Goat Cheese, Gruyére, and Rosemary Pizza. This pizza was delicious. We loved the fresh rosemary, evenly distributed toppings, and crispy crust!
Next we had an American comfort food classic, crispy chicken wings. Gem takes this classic dish an elevates it. Their Chicken Wing Confit was irresistibly good! The wings were deliciously crispy and the seasoning, especially the fresh herbs mixed in the breading, was delightful! These were fall of the bone good!
The Roast Dates Wrapped in Bacon with pinenut gremolata and Manchego cheese were tasty. However, the bacon was slightly undercooked. The plating was beautiful and the flavors blended well together!
The most unsuccessful dish we had all night were the Tuna & Salmon Tostadas with cumin cream, avocado, watermelon, and mango. We ordered this dish following our waiters suggestion. However, we were very disappointed with it. As it is obvious from the photo, the ingredients were not evenly proportioned on each tostada. The left tostada was all fish and watermelon, the middle tostada was all avocado, and the right tostada was full of mango. The flavors just did not mix well in this dish and the plating was not up to Gem's usual high standard.
Up next we had Gem's "Chicken Fried" Frog Legs with black pepper, ramp aioli, and dark ale. This is one of those dishes that you will either hate or love. James was not a fan, Aida loved it. James just could not get over the texture of the frog meat. Yet, Aida, not bothered by the texture, thought the seasoning was spot on and found the crispy breading to be addictive!
Our waiter surprised us with a dish that came as a compliment of the chef. This was one of the night's specials, Champagne Foie Gras with grilled crostini. This was our first time having foie gras and we weren't sure what to expect. The foie gras was like butter on the crostini. It is definitely an acquired taste, however the more we ate it the more we loved it! Thank you!
Last but not least, we ordered Gem's Pan Fried Burger with caramelized onions and Gruyére. Last time we dinned at Gem we absolutely fell in love with their burger. This time around the burger was good, although a bit undercooked; we ordered it medium and the temperature was closer to medium rare. The really disappointing part were the french fries, last time we could not get enough of their herby deliciousness; please bring these back!
Gem's new menu is full of delicious offerings and we would recommend it to anyone looking for a good meal and great service around the Boston area!
